Xochimilco

Characteristics

Splendid combination of natural and cultural heritage that add seven centuries of life. Located 28 kilometers south of central Mexico, the site of Xochimilco with its networks of canals and artificial islands is an exceptional example of the works of the prehispanics to build a habitat in an environment hostile to man. The chinampas, artificial islets anchored to the swampy bottom, are one of the examples of traditional productive techniques still in use.

Attractions:

Chinampas

The chinampas are cultivated areas of intensive production, literally handmade. They began to be constructed from remote times in the lake of Xochimilco. To build them, the growers looked for swampy, shallow, lacustrine areas. It is estimated that they were conceived in the 14th and 16th centuries and for their majesty they have been the object of worldwide attention since the Spanish conquerors discovered their existence in the 16th century. Possibly, the main attraction of the chinampas is the extraordinary fertility of the soil that, combined with the abundance of water and the labor of the farmer, became an intensive production system without equal in the world.

Plant Market

The markets of Xochimilco are the oldest in Mexico City. In them you can find everything from vegetables and fruits to plants and crafts. In these markets, the tenants offer a variety of tools necessary for gardening, as well as fertilizers and pots of various shapes, colors and sizes. Another attraction that can be enjoyed is in the handicraft markets located at the Nativitas and Cuemanco wharfs where producers from the region offer wood, ceramic, mache, copper, basketry and replica archaeological pieces.

Trajinera Pier Nativitas

Embarcadero Las Flores Nativitas is one of the three traditional piers located in Nativitas founded in 1993.

The Embarcadero Las Flores Nativitas has always been concerned to highlight its objectives as a tourist and cultural institution. For this reason, since 2010, we are organizers of cultural events such as “The legend of Nahual, Xochimilco” and “The legend of the volcanoes”, whose main objectives are:

  • The ecological rescue of our Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
  • Promote culture so that it is a fundamental axis of our educational and social development.
  • Generation of jobs for the economic development of the xochimilca society.

Parroquia Siena San Bernardino

The convent of San Bernardino de Siena was founded by the order of the Franciscans during the sixteenth century and was a key for the evangelization of the peoples of southern Lake Mexico. The aforementioned altarpiece is a jewel of New Spanish art, which was probably completed in 1596, including painting work.

Xochimilco, a Nahuatl word meaning “In the Place of Sementera Florida”, is a place to discover and enjoy its natural riches, its historical monuments, its traditions, its chinampera zone and its culture.
